CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University senior quarterback Jake Willcox and Middlebury College senior defensive lineman Tomas Kenary are this week’s recipients of the New England Football Writers Association Gold Helmet Awards presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
Willcox, a native of Everett, Mass., and a graduate of Milton Academy, led a game-winning 76-yard drive to earn Brown a 29-25 victory over in-state rival Bryant University. Bryant had taken a 25-22 lead with only 1:03 remaining on the clock. Willcox went 4-6 through the air to four different receivers on the drive accounting for all 76 yards, capping the effort with a 4-yard touchdown pass with 0:13 remaining in the game. Willcox was 36-49 (.735) for the day for 355 yards and had additional scoring strikes of three and 12 yards.
Kenary, from Chevy Chase, Md., and a Landon School graduate, helped Middlebury hold Amherst scoreless for three quarters en route to a 21-7 season-opening victory. Kenary led all players with 4.5 sacks for a loss of 44 yards. The senior had a pair of sacks just outside the red zone in the third and fourth quarters, each turning the Mammoths over on downs. Kenary totaled seven tackles (four solo) and an interception during the victory.
For the ninth straight year, the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation is the presenting sponsor for both the weekly and end-of-year Gold Helmet Awards presented to student-athletes from FBS, FCS, Division II and Division III institutions throughout New England.
